Rodáno
Fattoria di Rodano is a farm located in the municipality of Castellina in Chianti in the province of Siena, where wine, oil and pigs are raised in the wild. Enrico Pozzesi is the owner of the winery.
Since the early sixties, the company has been a member of the Chianti Classico consortium. Since 2007, grape production has been governed by organic rules methods.
Fattoria di Rodano is located along one of the country roads - wide, easy to walk and cycle, passable by car - that lead from the Elsa Valley to Castellina in Chianti, a few kilometers from Monteriggioni, Siena and San Gimignano, places of great historical and artistic interest.
The Chianti Classico is a geographical area of the classic sub-area, first defined in 1932. It covers an area of approximately 70,000 hectares between the provinces of Florence and Siena. In 2004, approximately 7,000 hectares of land were cultivated with vineyards registered in the Chianti Classico register, confirming that Classico is the largest sub-area in the whole of Chianti.
It entirely includes the historical municipalities of Chianti, i.e. Castellina in Chianti, Radda in Chianti and Gaiole in Chianti plus the entire territory of the municipality of Greve in Chianti and partly the territories of Barberino Val d'Elsa, Castelnuovo Berardenga, , Poggibonsi, San Casciano in Val di Pesa and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa. Fattoria di Rodano is located on the road that goes from the valley of the Elsa river to Castellina in Chianti, at an altitude of between 200 and 300 m above sea level. It is located on the western edge of Chianti Classico, where the hills are gentle and open to a climate tempered by sea winds. Via Franchigena The Via Franchigena, Francigena, Francisca or Romea is part of a set of paths, also called Via Romee, which in the Middle Ages led pilgrims from northern Europe to Rome. The section from Canterbury to Rome covers a 1,600-kilometre route that starts in Canterbury and arrives at Dover to cross the English Channel; from Calais, via Reims, Besançon and Lausanne, you arrive at the Alps, which cross the Great St. Bernard Pass. From Valle d'Aosta you descend to Ivrea, then to Vercelli. A fairly popular route was also the one that led from Chambéry over the Mont Cenis Pass to Sousse and along the Susa River. The Valle di Susa, passing through the abbey of Novalesa and the Sacra di San Michele, reached Turin and then to Vercelli, from there with a single route to the first. After Pavia, you cross the Apennines between the provinces of Piacenza and Parma and pass through the duchy of Montebello, Segalara, Fornovo di Taro and then Berceto. From Pontremoli continue to Lucca, Porcari, Altopascio, Galleno, Ponte a Cappiano, Fucecchio, San Gimignano or Poggibonsi, Colle di Val d'Elsa, Siena, Montefiascone, Viterbo and end in Rome. At that time, there was a Benedictine settlement on the Rhône River, where travelers stopped during long journeys.
Fattoria di Rodano Vineyards: In 1958, when Carlo Pozzesi bought the farm, he began planting vineyards that did not exist at the time. The first vintage sold in bottles was in 1967. Today the company covers more than 100 hectares, a third of which are vineyards in production and the rest not yet producing, which will bear fruit in about two years. In addition to the traditional Chianti Classico and Riserva Viacosta, two super Tuscans are also produced: Monna Claudia (a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet-Sauvignon) and Lazzicante (pure Merlot). Chianti Classico comes from traditional red grape varieties and expresses their color and aroma. In Riserva Viacosta, Sangiovese is fully expressed, emphasizing a strong but sweet character that is based on the warmth and elegance of fine tannins. For several years, the old vineyards have been gradually restored, taking into account the findings of the research on "Chianti Classico 2000", especially in terms of about the rootstock, the planting density and the form of the vines. The Sangiovese clones used come mostly from the mass selection of the vines present in our company and from the clones selected as part of the "Chianti Classico 2000" research, which is still ongoing.
Not only vineyards...
At Fattoria di Rodano we don't just produce good wine: we produce oil and raise pigs in the wild. Then there are many other animals, small and large, that keep us company... As in any farm that respects itself, the farm animals cannot be missing. Little Agnese's requests are increasing and our great respect for them is such that we pamper them and treat them as members of the family... all our Tibetan goats have names given to them by Agnes and live in harmony with the roosters, hens and rabbits. Our pigs We have about 30 pigs born to two ancestors Gigi and Rosa, from this union were born the fenced, gray and tawny pigs, the old species that were bred in Tuscany reappeared. A large space is reserved for them in the downy oak forest that has been fenced and where they live in the wild and where they can feed on the acorns they crave.
Their diet is made of field beans and organic barley and organic barley. Pets: Our dogs, whose ancestor is Birbo and from which we have drawn the rustic origin called "Rodanese". They are so well known in the area that they visit the living rooms of the neighbors who welcome them indulgently. The cats, Cocololina and Margherita, snuggle up where you can always find a ray of sunshine or a summer shade. Without spoiling anyone, we also mention our two goldfish... Birds And finally, the canary aviaries, Enrico's great passion, which he also passed on to Angelo. Hearing them sing in the morning is wonderful. Although they are not bred in the Rhône, we have wild bees and countless insects that testify to how life is led in the Rhône.
