Marco Donati

In the heart of the fascinating scenery of Trentino, characterized by a series of valleys, Dolomite mountains and hills, lies the Piana Rotaliana, which Cesare Battisti called the most beautiful vineyard in Europe. It is here, in Mezzocorona, that our winery is located, one of the oldest in Trentino, known since 1863. Today, the winery is managed by our family: Marco Donati, Emanuela (wife) and Elisabetta (daughter).Committed to fully discovering the typical original Trentino varietal heritage, we also try to experiment with stimulating encounters with new vineyards. It is the passion that  has driven us to continue the family tradition and that gives us the impetus to grow and improve day by day. Because above all, from passion you can obtain the best results and, consequently, the noblest wines. The family business is recognized as a reference point for the Trentino winemaking tradition, which has always been committed to developing a quality wine heritage.

The vine with which the Donati family is historically linked is Teroldego, an autochthonous vine from which the legendary "Teroldego Dragon's Blood" is produced. For this cru, the best grapes are selected from vineyards up to 90 years old, still planted by great-grandfather Marco, who already dreamed of making high-quality wines from these vineyards.

Our story begins in 1863, when Luigi Donati bought the Donati estate, along with the building dating back to 1400, which belonged to the Counts of Spaur. The term maso refers to a well-demarcated farm, all of which is united and traditionally cultivated by a family. The central tower of the palace, along with three others in the district, was part of the defense system of Mezzocorona. All of this is dominated by medieval castles perched on a mountain, to which the legend of the dragon is linked. Interestingly, even before the Counts Spaur, the estate belonged to the butler of the Tyrolean Counts. The court butler had considerable importance at that time, comparable to a minister, and this shows that even then these vineyards were considered very valuable and the wines that came from these vineyards were the privilege of the most select tables.

More than one hundred and fifty harvests link our company with Trentino.  Our rare collection of bottles tells a little of our story. In the underground cellars we lovingly keep two bottles from 1863 and several rare pieces that testify to our "culture" of wine. Winemaking is like a journey from the past to the present, oriented towards the future. Today, Alžběta represents the sixth generation and the tradition continues...
