Ferghettina

Ferghettina  owes its creation to the ingenuity, intuition and foresight of Roberto Gatti. Roberto was born in 1953 in Cazzago San Martino into a family of farmers and winemakers and from an early age moved with his whole family to Erbusco, in the heart of Franciacorta. In his youth he worked with his father in a company of this denomination, then alone in another well-known company as a cellar and vineyard manager. He did this for more than 20 years, thanks to his in-depth knowledge of the Franciacorta wine industry and the most modern winemaking techniques. The year is 1991 and Roberto and his wife Andreana take over the management of 4 hectares of land in the municipality of Erbusco and the property that he is converting into a cellar. During the 1991 harvest, he presented his first two wines: Terre di Franciacorta Rosso and Bianco.

Ferghettina was born, whose name derives from the toponym of the map on which the company's headquarters are built. The following year, he produced his first Franciacorta, a brut, which is still the driving force of the company today. Ferghettina grew in a short time. Thanks to the respect he enjoys in Franciacorta, Roberto rents numerous plots of land for very long periods, which he ensures for the vines according to the most meticulous winemaking rules.

Today, our company manages 200 hectares of vineyards in organic farming, located in 11 municipalities of Franciacorta, and manages to make the most of the differences in the different soils with tangible advantages in terms of wine quality. Ferghettina is truly a family affair: everything is run by Roberto and Andreina, with the increasingly important help of their children Laura and Matteo, both of whom have degrees in oenology, and a large group of collaborators.

At Ferghettina, we have squared the circle. It is a "square" bottle. Thanks to the specific shape of the bottle, designed and patented by Matteo, Roberto's son, Franciacortas aged on the lees can benefit from a contact surface between the wine and the yeast that is two and a half times greater than in a round bottle. The side of the bottle is actually flat on the inside, so the surface for the yeast deposits is greater. The result of this contact is the greater release of mannoproteins and yeast lysate, which qualitatively enrich the wine with aromatic components.

On the hills of Franciacorta, viticulture has distant roots, as evidenced by the discovery of grape seeds from prehistoric times and the writings of classical authors such as Pliny, Columella and Virgil. The rich archaeological material from the prehistoric period, such as the remains of pile dwellings found in the Torbiere del Sebino area, tells how a primitive population settled here, which was gradually displaced by the Cenomanian Gauls, Romans and Lombards. Viticulture was constant in Franciacorta, since from Roman times through late antiquity and until the Middle Ages, vineyards grew thanks to the favorable climatic and soil conditions. With its ups and downs, winemaking in these countries has never stopped.
